What is a Geodata Portal and how to use it? These were some of the key questions during the workshop “Monitoring & Forecasting Efforts & Hands On with Geodata Catalog Service”, taking place on 23 March at the AfriAlliance Conference. The workshop was hosted by The University of Twente's Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation.

After an introduction by Dr. Chris Mannaerts, Dr. Rob Lemmens explained the purpose of the web-based portal in the AfriAlliance project, which will provide African and European stakeholders with easy access to geographically explicit Monitoring and Forecasting information and co-located analysis on water and climate challenges in Africa.

In a second presentation, he explained the tutorial and how to interact with the AfriAlliance Geodata Portal. This was followed by a round of practice where the audience explored the portal themselves and added a dataset. It was the first time for many delegates within the audience to take part in such an exercise using a catalog information tool.

During wrap up, session co-chair Dr. Hans van der Kwast from UNESCO-IHE reiterated two important points: metadata should clarify terms of use of data; and metadata enable users to determine if the data is suitable for his/her purpose - they don’t need to go through all the data sets on the AfriAlliance Geodata Portal.
