Water scarcity is a serious issue affecting many parts of the world, including South Africa. The National Water and Sanitation Masterplan identifies the implementation of water reuse as one of the key interventions for augmenting water supply, and meeting a number of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The development and testing of appropriate water reclamation technologies is one important aspect towards supporting the institutional implementation of water reuse and for improving public understanding and informed acceptance of water reuse. The Water Research Commission, in collaboration with Umgeni Water have initiated a study (WRC project K5/2807), aimed at demonstrating water reclamation technologies at pilot scale and establishing a national water reuse learning forum as a platform for sharing and exchanging general knowledge on water reuse and technical information on the performance of water reclamation technologies. Umgeni Water’s Water Recover plant includes a visitor’s centre which allows the general public to interact with the technologies through tours and demonstrations. Every year, a learning forum is convened in partnership with stakeholders to raise awareness and disseminate information regarding on-going projects and new advancements. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event (2nd Annual National Water Reuse Learning Forum) will be held virtually and will take place on 26th November 2020. The online event will feature presentations from the research team, speakers from different institutions to share information on other ongoing initiatives in South Africa, as well as other international experts on water quality
