Webinar - Water productivity, the yield gap, and nutrition: the case of Ethiopia

In observance of the World Food Day, FAO is hosting a webinar on 16 October 2019 addressing hunger and water under SDGs 2 and 6.

Water is among the key inputs for crop production and a major linchpin for the achievement of multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For a necessary and desirable transformation of agriculture, there is an urgent need to unify the different aspirations of the SDGs such as water-use efficiency (SDG 6.4), the increase of agricultural productivity and incomes of smallholder farmers, and the elimination of all kinds of malnutrition (SDG 2). This is motivated by the need to align with the UN General Assembly Declaration of 2016-2025 as the Decade of Action for Nutrition and the Decade of Action for Water (2018-2028).  The achievement of SDG 2 requires concerted efforts to enhance efficiency and productivity in the use of water (SDG 6.4) and other resources, with a nutrition lens.

Objectives of the webinar:

The webinar aims to increase the understanding of the links between water, food security, nutrition and livelihoods of smallholder farmers. In the context of water scarcity, the webinar presents a framework to assess options to increase yields and produce more high-nutrient dense food, based on the results of a country case study in Ethiopia.
