  • Ecosystem Restoration

In the wake of a mounting global climate crisis, ecosystem restoration has become a priority mandate for policymakers around the world, ultimately leading to the declaration of the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030. Despite the fact that peatlands cover a mere 3% of the earth’s landmass, their role in the global carbon cycle is significant and has started to garner the attention of mainstream policymakers and environmentalists, due to their unique attributes and a multitude of ecosystem functions.

Organsied by the FAO and their partners, this webinar will provide an overview of peatland mapping and monitoring for climate change mitigation and fire risk reduction, and innovative approaches to tackle these challenges. Moreover, modules of the SEPAL platform will also be explored. There will be time allocated for participants to engage in a Q&A discussion. The session will be held in English, and recordings will be shared with those who enroll.

Presenters:

  • Mr Budi Wardhana, Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG), Indonesia
  • Prof Dr Hans Joosten, Institute of Botany and Landscape Ecology at the University of Greifswald
